Getting Started

Getting started with Paleo can be tough.  We have to literally retrain our bodies from deriving its energy from the short-term spiky energy of sugar/carb consumtion to the steady, stable energy extracted from fat and protein.

My start with paleo almost ended in disaster when I misunderstood its key principles.  While this is the topic I would like to write a lot more about, here are some good places to begin:

  • My own Gentle Start advice for my dad.
  • Modern Paleo Principles (a note of warning! if you are a high-carb-eater, start by eating a lot more meat before you go down the list there)
  • Panu's Get Started .  This is a great approach for those who need the most work - like I did!
  • Five ways to add fat to your meal will help you transition to eating healthy fat, even if your family does not agree
  • Simplifying - an almost paleo diet is the description of the principles that helped me get a second start in the Paleo diet when I found the effort to be too much and was ready to give up
I would like to repeat the last point of advice I gave my dad:

Paleo should be about getting more about life, not about deprivation or "dieting".  Enjoy yourself!  If you are not, something has gone awry.  Go and check your premises.

  2. Hi Lindsey - done. And appreciate that you pointed me to your blog! Love it. :-) Most importantly, because you have a 3-yr-old tester. Mine are 2 & 4 and transition to paleo has had its ups and downs!
